Woodford Greeners are looking for volunteers to help create our new Community Garden in Walled Garden at Ray Park. We are looking for people who enjoy being outdoors and have enthusiasm to get stuck in and learn new skills.
We hold regular volunteer sessions at the garden:
Every Tuesday 10am - 12.30pm. Tea/coffee (provided,) break at the end of the session, to chat and socialise, which we encourage people to stay for, but not compulsory.
2 Saturdays a month (approx. depending on supervisor availability,) Usually the 1st & 3rd Saturdays. Drop in anytime between 10am - 3pm, at your convenience. Tea/coffee (provided,) break at around 12.30pm
Main tasks and responsibilities
- Transforming an overgrown area of weeds into a beautiful garden of flowers, fruit trees, medicinal herbs and a vegetable growing patch.
- Weeding, tidying and deadheading the borders
- Mulching paths and cleared areas with cardboard and barrowing woodchip to cover these areas
- Creating new beds & borders
- Seed sowing, and propagation of new plants from cuttings etc
- Selective watering in dry spells, veg and young plants
- Weeding and maintenance of some local beds and planters that we've adopted in the local area
- On-going care & maintenance of our little Community Orchard just outside the park
- We plan to be as eco-friendly as possible, committed to being pesticide-free, growing plants from seed or seedling in peat-free and minimising our use of plastic where possible.
Benefits to the volunteer
- Learn and improve new or existing skills in gardening and wildlife.
- Spend time outdoors and in nature.
- A sense of fulfilment carrying out activities that will benefit the community as well as the environment.
- An opportunity to meet new people who share an interest in gardening and nature.
- Great for those interested in helping towards local wildlife, sustainability and the environment.
What skills do I need?
Skills, attributes, experience and qualifications
- Have an interest and enthusiasm for the natural world.
- You should feel comfortable and happy working outdoors in different weather conditions.
- Be prepared to roll your sleeves up and get stuck in, in the fresh open air.
- An interest in gardening is welcome but you can be a complete beginner.
- If you have any physical access needs, we can tailor activities to suit your requirements and volunteers can help out for as long or as short a time as they feel comfortable with.
- Unfortunately the garden is not currently suitable for wheelchairs as the ground is still uneven, but we hope to make it wheelchair friendly in the future when we're able to construct hard, level pathways.
