Royal Gunpowder Mills

The Royal Gunpowder Mills is a 170 acre site protected for its’ industrial heritage and natural history. Almost the whole site is classed as a Scheduled Ancient Monument (SAM) and is designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). We open to the public to share the exhibitions and offer tours and activities. We run a schools programme that fits with the history of the site and the National Curriculum. We offer hire space and interesting environments for filming. The charity’s aims are to protect, preserve and enhance the special aspects of the site and to share the story of the industrial and social history, the science and the nature

Main tasks and responsibilities:

  • As a guide you will welcome the passengers, give a short safety talk before setting off to pass on the wonders of the site by communicating important features and facts for their enjoyment and education.

What skills do I need?

Skills, attributes, experience and qualifications

  •  With good communication/presentation skills, being able to explain clearly and effectively.
  •  Having an interest and some knowledge of relevant history/nature. You will be given all the information required, and support from         the experienced volunteers and the Volunteer Manager.
  •  With a willingness to learn new information and gain a thorough knowledge of the site and its operations.
  •  Who is able to keep to time allocations to work in conjunction with other activities.
  •  With a willingness to be out of doors in variable weather conditions and the ability to stand on the trailer for the 30 minute tour.
  •  Who is confident and able to work with a wide range of public.
  • Who is reliable, e.g. informing the relevant Royal Gunpowder Mills staff in good time, where possible, if not able to attend on any                agreed days/times.
  • Who is prepared to engage with the visitors in.
