Vine/Malachi Gardening club Volunteer

We are a small, friendly team of volunteers from vine church who run a gardening club with residents from Malachi Place, a Salvation Army facility in Ilford for people who are homeless. We have created and developed 3 nature friendly gardens on the Vine church site in Holstock Road and Riches Road, Ilford. These  provide a home for plants, butterflies, bees, other creatures and people.

We meet every Thursday morning from the end of March to the end of October. We work with the Malachi residents in the gardens from 9-30am to 11-30am and then enjoy drinks and snacks with them.

Main tasks and responsibilities

• Planting, weeding, pruning, harvesting ,composting, and other gardening tasks depending on your  interests.
• You may like to   make bird boxes, bug hotels, garden signs, planters etc.
• You will do all the  tasks alongside Malachi residents, encouraging them and affirming them.
• You may also be asked to help to prepare simple refreshments (Tea , coffee and cake) at the end of the session.

What skills do I need?

Skills, attributes, experience and qualifications

• You do not need to have extensive knowledge of gardening but you do need to enjoy being outdoors.
• Be willing to do basic gardening tasks like planting, weeding, harvesting and composting.
• A love of nature, and of growing is an advantage.
• You need good social skills, so that you can  encourage and affirm the Malachi residents in their tasks in the garden.
• We ask that you come to our Thursday morning sessions on a regular basis so that Malachi residents get to know and trust you.

Details

We have a weekly session from 9-30 to 11-30 every Thursday morning. Although the gardening season finishes on October 23 for this year we will begin again in March and will do occasional sessions through the winter.
