Volunteer Marshall for Chariot Festival

The Chariot Festival Sunday 3rd August 2025

The Chariot Festival will have around 1000 devotees on foot following a large wooden chariot which is pulled along the road by around 30 people.

The procession is from 10am - 1pm and goes at a slow walking pace along the route. We will gather the volunteers at the Temple ground from 9am on Sunday 3rd August 2025.

We have Temple devotees who act as marshals for the event but more help would be appreciated. We have a Traffic Management order which gives us permission to divert/ hold traffic along these roads.

Volunteers is to help manage/ divert cars along the procession route. The route is as follows: 

 From the corner of Ley street/ Brisbane Road, we walk along Ley Street, turn into Christchurch Road, then Thorold Road, then Perth Road and finally a long stretch of Ley Street until we are back where we started.

 Main tasks and responsibilities 

  •  Volunteers is to help manage/ divert cars along the procession route. 
  • Volunteer will need to be  able to speak to the public with respect and liaise with the organisers of the event.
  • Volunteers will need to walk along the route once each section is complete to check that the attending devotees have not left any litter on the public road/ or neighbouring properties. Plastic gloves and black bags will be provided if they are willing. 

Benefits to volunteer 

  • We will serve lunch (generally Sambar rice) in takeaway containers/ or plates at the Temple premises between 1-2pm following the completion of the Chariot Procession.
  • Snacks are served by devotees who live along the procession route which all volunteers are welcome to, which includes water and drinks. 

 


What skills do I need?

Skills, attributes, experience and qualifications.
  • Volunteers will be need to wear a high vis jacket which will be provided and collected at the end.
  • Each volunteer will be stationed in pairs at one section of the road., they may be required to move to another section when the rolling road closure for that   section is completed. 
  • Any faith personal can volunteer, they must be able to speak in English to liaise with the public. 
  • All volunteers must be over 18 years,
