Trainee Accountant (CIC Youth Project)

Commitment: 1 Day Per Week (Flexible)

 Purpose of the role: To provide essential financial oversight and administrative support for a youth-led community project, ensuring all volunteer-managed funds are accurately recorded and compliant with CIC regulations.

Main tasks and responsibilities

  • Merging individual volunteer expense sheets and project-specific budgets into one master ledger.
  •  Ensuring bank statements match the internal records of the volunteer group.
  • Monitoring specific grants or donations to ensure money is being spent on the intended youth activities.
  • Assisting in the preparation of the CIC’s annual accounts for Companies House and HMRC.
  •  Helping draft the mandatory report that explains how the project has benefited the community over the year.
  • Basic assistance with Corporation Tax filings (if applicable) under the supervision of the Board.
  • Reviewing and approving volunteer receipts to ensure they align with the project’s financial policy.
  • Maintaining an organized digital or physical filing system for all invoices, receipts, and grant agreements.
  •  Creating simple monthly "Budget vs. Actual" summaries to show the volunteer group how much funding is left.

What skills do I need?

Skills, attributes, experience and qualifications

  • Education: Currently studying toward an accounting qualification (AAT, ACCA, CIMA, or a Finance degree).
  • Technical: Basic to intermediate proficiency in Excel (vlookups, sums, and formatting) or cloud software like Xero/QuickBooks.
  • Attributes: High attention to detail, integrity, and an interest in social enterprise or youth development.
  • Communication: Ability to explain financial terms simply to volunteers who may not have a finance background.
  • Volunteers would need their own laptop
  • need to be 18+
