*****Volunteer Wanstead Activity Centre – Kitchen Assistant

About this Role

Support the preparation, serving, and clean-up of meals in a friendly, community setting. Help create a welcoming environment by assisting in the kitchen, ensuring food is served safely, hygienically, and with a smile. A great role for someone who enjoys teamwork and making a practical difference.

What will you be doing?

Main tasks and responsibilities

• Assist with basic food preparation (e.g. peeling, chopping, plating)

• Serve meals and refreshments to service users

• Help set up and clear dining areas before and after meals

• Wash up dishes and kitchen equipment

• Keep kitchen and food areas clean, tidy, and hygienic

• Follow food safety and hygiene guidelines at all times

• Work as part of a friendly, supportive team

• Provide a warm and welcoming experience for service users during mealtimes

 Help provide a friendly, caring atmosphere during mealtimes

• Support the kitchen team to prepare and serve meals efficiently

• Ensure food is handled safely and hygienically

• Make mealtimes enjoyable and inclusive, reducing loneliness and isolation

• Enable our service to reach and support more people in the community

Your practical help makes a real difference to the wellbeing and happiness of those we serve.

How would you be supported in this role? 

• Full training is provided so you will be prepared for being a companion and know what to expect.

• Minimum 2 volunteers working with the service users.

• Regular contact with the Wanstead Activity Centre manager

• Regular supervision with the Volunteer Services Team

• You will also have support from our staff when you need it throughout your service.

• Out of pocket expenses and Travel expenses will be covered in line with our Expenses policy

• References available upon request (after 3 months)


What skills do I need?

Skills, attributes, experience and qualifications

• Interest in food preparation and kitchen work

• Basic knowledge of hygiene and food safety (or willingness to learn)

• Ability to follow instructions and work as part of a team

• Good communication and friendly manner

• Reliable and punctual

• Comfortable standing for periods and performing physical tasks

• Experience in catering, hospitality, or volunteering in similar roles (helpful but not essential)

• Enjoy working in a busy, social environment

• Team player with a positive attitude

• Patient and calm under pressure

• Organised and attentive to detail

• Willing to learn and follow health & safety guidelines

  • Need to be 18+
