Wellbeing support Volunteer

The Wellbeing Support Volunteer plays a key part in creating a safe, calm, and uplifting environment for individuals living with mental health challenges or dementia. The role focuses on offering emotional support, social connection, and meaningful engagement that helps reduce isolation and promotes a sense of belonging.

Main tasks and responsibilities

  • Social Engagement — chatting with attendees, encouraging conversation, and helping them feel comfortable and included.
  • Activity Support — assisting with group activities such as crafts, gentle exercise, reminiscence sessions, music, or wellbeing workshops.
  • Emotional Support — offering patience, reassurance, and a listening ear to individuals who may feel anxious, confused, or low in confidence.
  • Practical Assistance — helping set up the session, making refreshment's for the attendees, preparing materials, supporting mobility needs, and ensuring the environment remains calm and safe. 
  • Observation & Communication — noticing changes in mood or behaviour and sharing observations with staff to ensure attendees receive appropriate support.
  • Promoting Independence — encouraging individuals to participate in activities at their own pace, helping build confidence and autonomy.
  • Creating a Positive Atmosphere — contributing to a warm, respectful, and inclusive space where attendees feel valued.

What skills do I need?

Skills, attributes, experience and qualifications

  • Communication skills — Able to speak clearly with attendees, families and the team.
  • Organisational ability — Managing session materials, attendance lists, or activity prep.
  • People support skills — Especially important for mental health, dementia, or community wellbeing groups.
  • Empathy — Understanding the needs of vulnerable adults, carers, and families.
  • Reliability — Turning up consistently and on time; important  for continuity of care.
  • Patience — Particularly for dementia or mental‑health‑related activities.
  • Confidentiality — Respecting sensitive personal information.
  • Teamwork — Working smoothly with staff, trustees, and other volunteers.
  • Calm under pressure — Helpful when supporting individuals who may become distressed or confused.
  • Need to be 18+ years old
  • An Enhanced DBS check — This is essential and an application will be made.
  • Experience with dementia or mental health not essential— Even informal experience (family, carers) is valuable.
  • Mobile phone — Useful for WhatsApp groups, emergency contact, and coordination.
  • Availability — Clear expectations about days, times, and frequency of volunteering.
  • Right to volunteer in the UK — Important for compliance.
  • Confidentiality agreement — Protects your attendees and your charity.
  • Induction process — Ensures volunteers understand our mission, policies, and safeguarding duties.
  • Commitment to equality and inclusion — Essential for community‑based charities.
